Version/Region Differences
There are three region versions of Ape 1: PAL (Europe), NTSC-U (USA) and NTSC-J (Japan).
Speedrun wise the PAL version should be ignored. like all PAL releases at the time, the game runs at 5/6th the speed of the NTSC versions but is otherwise the same.
The PAL version also has an antipiracy measure that locks the controls in the title screen. Because of this, the PAL disc cannot be played on a PS3 because it activates on it.
Unlike US and PAL versions, Japanese version can only skip cutscenes with the start button.
In the main menu, the "New Game" and "Load Game" options are swapped for US and PAL compared to JP.
US and JP versions are mostly identical in the speedun, there is zero difference in the Any% category.
For the completionist categories (All Monkeys, 100% and some side categories), the Japanese version is actually about 45~ seconds faster in the credits after the first specter fight, the credits must be sat through so it matters.
Platform Differences
The game can be played on the following platforms:
- PS1
- PS2
- PS3 (Disc)
- PS3 (PSN)
- PS4
- PS5
- Emulator
All models of the PS2 and PS3 consoles can play the original disc.
Only Japan got the PSN release of the game on PS3.
For speedruns the most optimal platform is the PS2 due to its Fast Disc Speed option, and if we want to be more specific the 90k slim model has the fastest load speed but the difference is miniscule.
The second fastest is the PS5 release but it seems to have problems with controls like deadzone issues and some have reported to only be able to move in 8 directions.
After those versions we have PS4, PS3 (Disc/PSN), Emulator and PS1.
Emulator is load speed wise nearly identical to PS1 but it lags a little less. On the PS3 you get similiar loads to Emu/PS1 and less lag but people have complained about input delay.
