Version/Region Differences

There are three region versions of Ape 3: PAL (Europe), NTSC-U (USA) and NTSC-J (Japan).

As with Ape Escape 1, the PAL version should be avoided because it runs at 5/6th the speed of the NTSC versions. The water in The Hot Springs is yellow in the JP version and blue in the other versions.

The Japanese version has an unique glitch in Airplane Squadron where you can skip the cutscene button in the second outside section because the loading zone for the next section is active at all times.

Platform Differences

The game can be played on the following platforms:

  • PS2
  • PS3 (Disc)
  • PS3 (PSN)

The PSN version was only released in Japan and is the fastest because of the load speed and the bad emulation which causes lava to not hurt you.

You can play the original disc on the PS3 but this needs a specific model of the console which are prone to failing.

For speedruns the PSN is fastest for the above mentioned reasons.

Emulators are banned.

Character Differences

Unlike Ape 1 and 2, this game has two playable characters. Sayaka the idol and Satoru the boy.

This isn't just a cosmical change because Sayaka acts as a hidden "Easy Mode".

As Sayaka is an idol, she has a monkey fan club. This means that select few monkeys in the game do not fight back at all if you play as her.

  • Sayaka
    • Club does 11 damage.
    • Knight Transform (on ground) does 18 damage on the first hit, 16 afterwards.
    • Knight Transform (jump hit) does 18 damage.
    • Monkey fan club.
  • Satoru
    • Club does 10 damage.
    • Knight Transform does 16 damage.
    • Monkeys see him from further away.

More details about the different damage values can be found on this google sheet, but in general Sayaka nearly always does 1 more damage than Satoru.Their hitboxes are also different size as some clips just don't work as Satoru.
